Brief personal history: Enlistment in the United States Marine Corps. seemed natural to young Matt Nighy. The Nighy family had a tradition of service to the Corps. and he saw it as his duty to be his family's third generation of Marine. Recognized as an excellent Marine, he was promoted to sergeant. Matt served with distinction in Afghanistan & Iraq before he ran afoul of one of his commanding officers. This led to his being assigned to T.A.S.K.'s International Joint Security Operations Group (IJSOG); a group comprised of military and law enforcement personnel from all over the world. While a member of IJSOG Sgt. Nighy underwent further training in operational procedures not covered by the military. He mastered ZeroG Combat and Superhuman Combatant Engagement in Urban Environments training.
As a top member of IJSOG he was part of an expeditionary force sent to the moon to investigate an energy anomaly. The anomaly was in fact an inter-dimensional breach, which transported the vanguard of an extra-dimensional army to the moon's surface. This event became known as the Foretold Lunar Incursion.
Nighy fought valiantly against overwhelming odds and amidst great loss. During the battle he was mauled by a creature composed entirely of black flames but still managed to render assistance to his commanding officer, Lt. Col. Lellios (aka Centurion), as she repelled the invading creatures. After helping the remaining survivors to their shuttle (the USS Foretold), Sgt. Nighy slipped into a coma.
While unconscious, a virus the alien creature introduced into his bloodstream made drastic changes to Sgt. Nighy's physiology. When he regained consciousness weeks later, he immediately burst into black flames; flames that gave no heat yet affected objects it touched the way a regular fire would; flames to which the sergeant was immune. In time Sgt. Nighy learned to control his abilities and he now serves as a U.S. military asset in matters where a superhuman response in warranted and a member of T.A.S.K. under the codename: Nightfire.
He's an exceptional Marine and a gritty combatant but most people know him from his many talk show appearances and "feel good" speaking engagements on behalf of the Marine Corps.
Powers and Abilities: Sgt. Matt Nighy gained a number of superhuman powers as a result of the effects of the extra-dimensional virus he was exposed to, all of which are related to a dark fire-like energy. This extra-dimensional energy reacts with matter in this dimension in the same way that normal fire reacts but produces no discernible heat. He possesses the ability to envelop his body in that black fire without harming himself. He can generate streams of black flame of such power and intensity that he can fly, propelled by the thrust of his own dark flame (much like a rocket). The black flame surrounding his body is destructive enough to destroy projectiles that approach him.
Nightfire's ability to use his dark flame is not dependant on oxygen and he can produce his flame in a vacuum.
Nightfire is a skilled marksman and excellent hand to hand combatant.
