MAIN CHARACTERS:
- Raphael "Ray" Riley:
Height: (before powers) 5'10" (after) 6'10"
Weight: (before powers) 170 lbs (after) 355 lbs.
Age: 25 (born 12/11/80)
Hair: Black, cut low in a "fade"
Eyes: Light Brown
Race: African American
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: None
Normal Mode of Dress:
Prior to going to prison, Raphael was normally seen in a black bandanna, baggy jeans, Nike sneakers, and short sleeved button shirts that went down to mid-thigh, all buttoned up. In prison, he wore the standard-issue orange jumpsuits. After prison, assuming his "identity" he wore a variety of "uniforms" including LAPD tactical gear, a Men-In-Black style suit with sunglasses, and finally loose fitting black cargo pants with pockets on the side and a thick collegiate cut burgundy sweatshirt with the word "BIGGER" emblazoned in white across the front (like his logo).
Known Superhuman Powers: Raphael Riley has incredible stamina, endurance and near-invulnerability to physical harm. He is unable to be seriously hurt by any form of physical or concussive force short of a 30 megaton explosion. He possesses Class 35 strength, being able to lift (press) 35 tons. He is likewise able to apply that strength to other feats, such as leaping great distances (as much as an eighth of a mile) or running at five times normal human speeds. Riley also gained a form of limited clairvoyance from his genetic history, which is enhanced by the virus that created his powers. These "feelings" often help him avoid things that might hit him (so in a combat situation he could probably dodge half the punches thrown at him) or give him glances at what could happen (such as the location of a lost item). Riley has no control over this last power, happening to him at seemingly random intervals.
History: Raphael "Ray" Riley was never anything special, and spent most of his life on the wrong end of trouble whether he meant to or not. Not a particularly mischievous or malicious person, he nevertheless became one of the usual suspects, especially after moving to Los Angeles at age 16 with his mother and sister after the death of his father. This string of bad luck led Riley to an encounter with the law he couldn't dodge, and he was imprisoned for a robbery he didn't commit. In the correctional facility at Mule Creek, Riley contracted a virus which gave him metahuman powers from Nicolas Angeletti. After an explosion at the prison, he was freed and escaped to return to the South Los Angeles streets he grew up on. Despite strong temptations to use his newfound powers selfishly, his strong Southern-influenced upbringing always brings him back to the road to heroism.
EDITOR'S NOTE: Raphael means "God has healed/the shining one who heals" in Hebrew, a name he will ultimately learn to live up to.
- David Dillon:
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 210 lbs.
Age: 31 (Born April 3, 1974)
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Black (shaved off)
Race: Caucasian
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Dillon has a jagged scar on the lower left side of his torso. Dillon also has a swastika tattooed on his right pec, and the words "white power" tattooed just below the neckline of an average shirt on his back.
Normal Mode of Dress: Prison fatigues with the shirt open or black jeans with a black denim shirt, again open chested.
Known Superhuman Powers: Dillon has the metahuman power to direct powerful kinetic blasts from his fists. He also possesses great durability, along the lines of kevlar vests, all over his body and Class 25 strength, with the ability to lift (press) 25 tons. When using his powers or in an enraged state, Dillon's body also generates a field of knietic force around it, which can sap the kinetic energy from projectiles and lessen the impact of most physical attacks.
History: Dillon grew up in the Venice community of Los Angeles the son of a policeman. His father, an ardent racist, brought him up with very negative views of people of color. He followed his father's career in the LAPD, but was fired for racist activity and planting evidence. This also created a rift in his marriage, ending his four year relationship with his wife Heather. Disillusioned, Dillon fell under the sway of a charismatic hatemonger who helped hone him into a leader of white supremacist youth. Dillon was finally convicted in his early 30s of aggravated assault when he got out of his car and assaulted a Black man who cut him off in traffic. In prison he continued his pattern of behavior, until jostling against Nicolas Angeletti in the prison infirmary and contracting the virus which gave him metahuman powers. Days later, discovering some of what he's capable of doing, Dillon smashed a wall next to a boiler in the prison, causing a huge explosion and escaping in the process. Dillon is a career criminal with no regard for any rules but his own. The only difference is, now he has the power to enforce them more effectively than ever before.
ARTIST NOTE: Dillon borrows heavily from Edward Norton's character in American History X as far as markings and rhetoric, and also former wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin, in terms of general mania and charisma (but, well, more in shape). He's a skinhead bodybuilder with massive rage control issues, so that should inform his body and his facial expressions.
EDITOR'S NOTE: "Dillon" means "Destroy," which factors into his character a great deal.
SUPPORTING CHARACTERS:
- Darlene Taggart:
6) Darlene Taggart (nurse at prison)
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 168 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Auburn
Race: Caucasian
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: A dent-like scar on her forehead from an altercation involving prisoners.
Normal Mode of Dress: Nurse's uniform or denim jacket with blue jeans and sweatshirt.
Known Superhuman Powers: Darlene Taggart has the metahuman ability to dampen or increase physical pain in herself and others.
History: A lackluster medical care worker, Darlene Taggart started working at the prison in 1993 and was happy to be unnoticed and not have to work very hard. She contracted the same virus that gave Raphael Riley his metahuman powers from Nicolas Angeletti.
ARTIST NOTE: Dumpy, somewhat downtrodden. Not fat, but surely not in shape. Kind of like a potato sack of a woman, the kind you'd see on a bus stop, looking down at the sidewalk.
- Doctor Lawrence Higgins:
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 190 lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black (close cropped)
Race: African American
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: None.
Normal Mode of Dress: Dark slacks, italian loafers, white button shirts and ties, doctor's jacket.
Known Superhuman Powers: Lawrence Higgins has the metahuman ability to psionically control and create currents of air. He can use this ability in a variety of ways, from concussive bursts of air to levitation and flight to sucking the air from the lungs of an opponent.
History: Dr. Higgins led an undistinguished medical career before accepting a position as one of the prison's doctors. Higgins was on when Nicolas Angeletti came to the prison infirmary and treated Angeletti there.
ARTIST NOTE: Dr. Higgins should borrow a great deal visually from actor Dennis Haysbert (shown here, perhaps best known for his work on Fox's 24), and his supercilious attitude towards the world borrows a great deal from his character on the short-lived CBS action show Now and Again.
- Alfred Martinez:
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 220 lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Race: Latino
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Martinez has a tattoo on his right bicep, a heart with the word "Gloria" in all caps inside.
Normal Mode of Dress: Prison guard uniform.
Known Superhuman Powers: Martinez has the metahuman ability to psionically create and control an immaterial energy duplicate of himself. This duplicate has no vulnerability to physical harm, but can be disrupted by high energy discharges (which cause great physical pain to Martinez). The energy duplicate has three times the strength of Martinez himself, is able to fly, can become intangible and pass through solid objects, and can communicate silently with Martinez from great distances.
History: Martinez graduated from a Northern California community college with an associate's degree in criminal justice. His younger brother was caught in gang crossfire when he was twelve, and he has unresolved anger towards crime in general. He played football in high school and was on the fast track for a college scholarship until a knee injury ended those hopes. He occupies his time with artwork, doing pencil sketches in a notebook he often carries, and is married to his high school sweetheart Gloria.
ARTIST NOTE: Kind of buff, like someone who's just getting good at working out, still beefy from years of fast living. Close cropped hairdo, beady eyes, well developed arms.
- Edward "Fast Eddie" Chase:
Height: 5'8"
Weight: 155 lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Race: African American
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Lean of frame, Chase has a wiry physique. He rarely cuts his fingernails.
Normal Mode of Dress: Prison fatigues or wifebeater t-shirts and khakis.
Known Superhuman Powers: Chase has the ability to become invisible to both visual detection and electronic surveillance, including infra-red and thermal detection.
History: Chase, an auto thief and grifter, was doing a 5 year sentence on Grand Theft Auto charges when he bumped into Nicolas Angeletti as he was brought into the prison. He contracted the virus which gave him his metahuman powers and escaped in when an explosion rocked the prison.
ARTIST NOTE: Eddie Chase should look much like Don Cheadle's character Cash in the movie Family Man. This includes the grungy look shown here, more when he's in prison, and the more suave, suited look the character had later in the movie when Chase is out and about in the world.
- Nicolas "Nic Angel" Angeletti:
Height: 5'5"
Weight: 148 lbs.
Eyes: Black
Hair: Black
Race: Italian American
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Angeletti has a thorned branch tattooed around his left bicep and a small angel tattooed on the back of his right shoulder.
Normal Mode of Dress: Prison fatigues or pinstriped suits
Known Superhuman Powers: Angeletti has low level telepathy, which allows him to eavesdrop on the thoughts of any one person at a time, or place a single slight suggestion in the mind of one person at a time.
History: Nicoletti gained his powers from a virus he contracted while working at his cousin's scrap metal yard. He was already a suspect in a hit-and-run vehiclular manslaughter case, and was eventually convicted and sent to prison. He was killed in the explosion that let many prisoners escape.
ARTIST NOTE: Kind of a sweaty, slick haired guy who's nervous. Smallish, coughing, 5 o'clock shadow. Habitually slumps a little when he stands. Nothing really memorable.
- Sherman Pierson:
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 167 lbs.
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black (cornrolls)
Race: African American
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: Several scars from knife fights in prison
Normal Mode of Dress: Prison jumpsuit or blue plaid shirt over jeans, bandanna and sunglasses.
Known Superhuman Powers: Pierson has the metahuman ability to persuade people to obey him through a combination of psionic and pheromone-based factors.
History: Pierson, a classic Napoleonic complex victim, joined the Hat Gang Crips in Watts at an early age, and turned to extreme violence (mostly in the form of guns) to make people stop teasing him about his height. After committing seven murders for his "set," he was finally convicted for two of the killings and sent to prison. He also ran into Nicolas Angeletti and contracted the virus which gave him his metahuman powers, and escaped in the confusion following the explosion shortly after, heading for Oakland in an attempt to confound law enforcement.
ARTIST NOTE: Grimier, balding West Coast version of Sean "Puffy" Combs.
- Heather Flynn:
Height: 5'6"
Weight: 120 lbs
Eyes: Blue
Hair: Blonde
Race: Caucasian
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: None
Normal Mode of Dress: Business suits with skirts, sensible shoes, hair worn down.
Known Superhuman Powers: None
History: Heather Flynn met and married David Dillon when they were both in college, but soon came to be disturbed by his extreme negative views of other races. When he was removed from the police force, his views became more violent and she felt unable to be with him anymore, as his organizing took him away from home more and more often. When convicted, she filed for divorce in absentia and went back to school, getting her MBA and starting a new relationship with international banker Javier Espinosa.
ARTIST NOTE: A curvier, more full bodied Portia di Rossi, with a physique more along the lines of an early Donna Dixon.
- Lt. Kevin Deutsch:
Height: 6'5"
Weight: 190 lbs
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Race: Caucasian
Other Distinguishing Characteristics: His hair always looks mussed.
Normal Mode of Dress: Loose fitting button shirts, tie always pulled down a bit, slacks, badge hitched on right side of belt. Chain-drinks coffee.
Known Superhuman Powers: None
History: Deutsch came up through the ranks, joining the force on a lark after a college career fair, working through Vice and Bunko before finally qualifying for Hostage Negotiations training. He's successfully talked his way through seven hostage situations before he runs afoul of David Dillon.
ARTIST NOTE: Deutsch should look something like Jimmy Fallon (shown here) by way of Hill Street Blues. Open collared button shirt, tie pulled down to second button, sleeves rolled up, badge hanging on left breast pocket.
