Desktop publishing, print layout, pre-press, image editing, copy editing and writing
When I took over editing the Herald-Dispatch for a sick friend and former boss, it felt like stepping back into the late 1980s. They were still pasting up the newspaper by hand, on lightboards, using Exacto knives. I shudder to even think of it.
Now I have them zipping the paper off from a Quark Xpress document they download from a neutral site, looking at images I've taken into Photoshop and prepared for their "I'll darken all your images" printing presses. I collect and organize all the copy and images, sometimes writing and creating things on the spot, and get the paper out every Thursday, like clockwork.
