The Luniz
Lunatik Muzik
Virgin Records
Touring with Digital Underground and their own outré roots has been good for the Bay Area's Luniz. Lunatik Muzik -- gratuitous references to weed, booze, drama and sex notwithstanding - is one damned enjoyable collection of music. Featuring guests like Eightball & MJG, Redman, E-40, Raphael Saadiq, and Too Short, this sophomore album borrows familiar themes (KRS's "Jimmy" becomes "Phillies," Ready For The World's "Digital Display" gets a weeded update, etc.), flips the script in the Luniz own off-kilter fashion and is equally amusing and artistic. Best of all, the Luniz understand that -- even on "Thugz Die" for our dearly departed -- it's okay to have fun in hip hop. Just like the old days.
