Supa Dupa Fly by Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot

Missy Elliot
Supa Dupa Fly
The Gold Mind, Inc./Elektra Records

Too slow by just a hair, the debut album from the queen of remixes and guest appearances, Missy Elliot makes an even, if uneventful, splash in the endless pool of musical artists. Backed by the fresh yet seemingly monochromatic production of Timbaland (best illustrated with SWV on "Can We"), Elliot croons and shimmies less energetically than the listener may expect. Elliot is a perfectly passable singer and an amusing if not wholly technical rapper. However, even with cameos by Ginuwine, Busta Rhymes, Da Brat, and Lil' Kim and the banging single "The Rain," one is left with a nodding head that wishes for just a touch more Misdemeanor at just a slightly higher speed. A solid freshman effort that shows an artis with plenty of room to grow into excellence.
