Jewel
Spirit
Atlantic Records
Spirit, the sophomore album from multiplatinum songwriter, poet, and all around renaissance girl Jewel, is an impassioned, systematic account on human potential, where Jewel strives to spread her message of personal improvement and empowerment.
"Hands" is undoubtably the strongest song on the CD, with lyrics that inspire and interest: "If I could tell the world just one thing/ it would be that we're all OK/ and not to worry 'cause worry is wasteful/ and useless in times like these/ I won't be made useless/ I won't be idle with despair/ I will gather myself around my faith/ for light does the darkness most fear/ my hands are small I know/ but they're not yours, they are my own/ but they're not yours they are my own/ and I am never broken."
A guest appeance by Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers on "Barcelona" brings up the level a bit, as the lyrics show: "Barcelona where the winds all blew/ and the churches don't have windows but the graveyards do/ me and my shadow are wrestling again/ look out stranger, there's a dark cloud moving in." You'll also find good stuff in "Fat Boy," "Jupiter" and "What's Simple Is True."
From her multiplatinum albums (Spirit was certified triple platinum in January) to her top selling book of poetry (A Night Without Armor), to an upcoming role in Ang Lee's Civil War epic Ride with the Devil, Jewel is a 24 year old who has the world at her feet and a benevolent attitude about it. With her whole career in front of her, this Jewel can only shine brighter.
