Fairy Tales by Divine

Divine
Fairy Tales
Pendulum Records/Red Ant Entertainment

Bright. Young. Optimistic. Those are all words that could easily be ascribed to the sparkling debut album by Divine, Fairy Tales. Three young ladies -- not a one is over 19 -- with a blazing platinum single (the slow jam "Lately," no relation to the Stevie Wonder hit of the same name) and the world at their feet. A musical Dawson's Creek, the innocence and brightness of Divine is their main appeal in a music field crowded with screaming rockers and growling rap.

The members, Nikki Bratcher (18), Kia Thornton (18), and Tonia Tash (19) bring a bright eyed, bushy tailed naiveté and sweet tone in their music. The album is an enjoyable collection of songs with many high points.

For instance, the George Michael remake, "One More Try," is a wistful yet bright interpretation of the 80's hit, with their tender harmonies intertwining and driving the song. The lead single, "Lately" shares that same kind of energy and feel, and has been very popular at radio stations everywhere.

The upbeat "I Never Thought" is a dance floor favorite, with perky drum cadences and a bouncy melody that is easy and fun to move to. A guest appearance by Lady Mecca, formerly of the platinum selling group Digable Planets, makes this even more fun.

The more acoustic "Sweet Essence" has almost a choral feel, with sweeping backgrounds and delicate vocals that make this a treasure.

Can divinity be so pure, so sweet? These three young ladies prove the answer is, "yes."
