WHAT IS #MUSICMONDAY?

Every week, I post a lot of links to free music you can download. Why? Why the hell not? I’m not hosting the links, I didn’t upload ‘em, I have no legal liability and I’m helping promote the artists. Essentially, I’m a g******ed hero! Enjoy!

Sometimes I rant about musical stuff — that goes at the end. The music is divided into three categories …

HOLD UP: Four quick notes before we start …

On May 2nd, 2011, this column (which is what we’ll be calling it from now on) will be moving to Komplicated.com. That’s what this was always intended for, and now that the feline has escaped the luggage, there’s no need to keep goofing around. That means if you’ve been doing this on Facebook, please click “like” on the Facebook page and you’ll be tagged. Somehow. Oh, I just realized how, never mind.

Second, the format of this column is changing. This was considered but is moving up in the queue because Sunday night had a hugely important consideration — a candle lit dinner conversation over salmon with my wife. Everything else had to fall by the wayside when she broke out her romantic steez. Sorry.

Third, we normally focus on downloads here, but Prince is playing 21 nights in Los Angeles (this columnist will be there April 22nd) and he’s doing some crazy stuff. How crazy? How about covering “Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough” by Michael Jackson, while Eva Longoria dances on stage? Hell yeah!

Finally, look for a #musicmonday extra late tonight with videos from Coachella. Just gotta sort through ‘em a bit, and didn’t wanna stand in the way of the downloads.

Column starts … now!

I’VE HEARD IT AND IT’S WORTH A LISTEN

  • Lots of great songs on R&B April Hits including another club banger from Pitbull, Chris Brown and Busta’s hot joint, that cut from Jennifer Lopez that I linked last week, even some stuff from Sade and Marsha Ambrosius … great stuff.
  • Speaking of great compilations, go on and download the Billboard Hot 40 including that Katy Perry song with Kanye, Nicki Minaj’s heater that’s rocking the charts with Drake, Dr. Dre, Adele, Lupe Fiasco, Bruno Mars and so on.

I SUSPECT THIS IS WORTH HEARING, BUT I’M TOO BUSY TO HAVE LISTENED TO IT

  • Common. Kanye West. “Follow Me” — just download it.
  • Janelle Monae. A whole set live from SXSW. Stop playing.
  • Fans of the Duck Down Brooklyn sound will appreciate this almost unlabeled 1992 mixtape from Black Moon’s Buckwild.
  • You might have heard that Nicki Minaj and Lil Kim have a war of whorishness, er, words going on. Anyway, here’s the latest salvo from the Harajaku Barbie (what does that mean) called “Real Pimpin’” (and not “Tragedy” as some outlets reported).
  • “How The Gods Chill” remix by Sean Price, featuring Meyhem Lauren and Roc Marciano. Honestly, I just liked the name.
  • I liked this one big single from Hollywood Undead, so their new album American Tragedy is surely worth a listen.
  • Oh, mash ups. I love ‘em. Here’s a double pack from a DJ called Faroff which puts Cee-Lo Green and the Temptations together with “Mashed Girl” and Lady Gaga vs. the Raspoutine Smoked Band called “Lady Gagarin” … okay, no idea what the last one was. Anyhoo, there’s also Mash Up Your Bootz Vol. 46 — a whole album full of mash ups.
  • Here’s a lot of instrumentals from DJ Don Cannon.
  • Xaphoon Jones is one half of the group Chiddy Bang and Mixtape Vol. 2 is his new solo project.
  • Miguel rocked “All I Want Is You” so I’m surely checking for “You Know”
  • New Lady Gaga? “Judas” — don’t play like you don’t want it.
  • “Pieces of Me” is a new song from Ledisi. I know, no download, I’m sorry.
  • 9th Wonder has produced “My Life” by Von Pea of Tanya Morgan.
  • “Tha Bizness” is a new song from Tha Bizness featuring Clinton Sparks.
  • “Flying High” is the new song form Honors English featuring TL Cross and Lupe Fiasco, a horn-heavy track produced by Needlz.
  • Did you check that Tron: Legacy soundtrack? You may have liked “The Game Has Changed” from Pharrell.
  • John Legend has been doing some interesting covers, and here’s “Rolling In The Deep,” a remix of an Edwin van Cleef cut.
  • Clay Hillman produced the highly recommended “Malcolm X” by Rickie Jacobs featuring Artic.
  • Dirty Vegas? They’re not just for Mitsubishi commercials any more with the “Changes” In Flagranti remix.
  • “You Are A Tourist” is a new song from Death Cab from Cutie.
  • Simple Plan has dropped “Can’t Keep My Hands Off You” from their upcoming new album.
  • I liked the Mixmasters Inc. mixtape with “Empire State of Mind” and “Forever” acoustic versions, so Love & Stadiums from Krucial Noise (that sounds familiar) is something I wanna hear.
  • How the hell did Donald Glover drop another mixtape already? I Do Not Talk is fresh from Childish Gambino.
  • Pitbull! “Nasty Girl” is another one for the dance floor alongside Wynter Gordon.
  • “Still On The Hustle” by Neek the Exotic and Large Professor … in hip hop, dude, you had me at Large Professor!
  • That J-Lo reign just won’t let up! “I’m Into You” has the dancing queen alongside Lil Wayne.
  • “Who Are You Now” teams up Lupe Fiasco and B.o.B … apparently Cee-Lo or Janelle Monae were slated to join up, but that didn’t work out.
  • More from Brooklyn’s Boot Camp? Monsta Mondays from Rock has him dropping “Multiply” alongside General Steele, Top Dog, Louisville Sluggah and Doc Holiday.
  • You should hurry up if you wanna download “War of the Roses” by Blaqstarr (not Black Star) featuring Talib Kweli.

I PROBABLY WOULDN’T LIKE IT, BUT MANY PEOPLE WOULD

I SUSPECT THIS IS WORTH HEARING, BUT I’M TOO BUSY TO HAVE LISTENED TO IT

  • New tracks from Ne-Yo include “Let’s Leave On The Lights,” “Love Victory” and “You’re A Star.”
  • Darkchild produced “Speedin’” for Ciara.
  • Two more new cuts from Trey Songz inlcude “Never Enough Time” (feat. Johnta Austin) and a remix of “Last Time.”
  • Donald Glover is making a run at this Childish Gambino thing. His new song “The Longest Text Message” was apparently made over Thanksgiving while he was drunk.
  • There’s a new mixtape from Eminem that features a lot of unreleased cuts from the Motor City emcee that have recently floated around the interwebs.
  • Here’s another classic collection of songs from the dearly departed Nate Dogg.
  • Alt-rock group Skysaw (formerly known as This) is “the latest vehicle for ex-Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlin.” “No One Can Tell” is their new song, a “tightly constructe chunk of melodic rock music.”
  • The Dirty Tees have a new song called “Let You Go” featuring Ashley Couse.
  • Here we go — mashups. I love mashups! Vs5 is a new album from Robin Skouteris full of musical combinations that were not meant to be.
  • Jalani’s “Paradise” is “something for the folks who rock headphones at work to use as an escape. If a beautiful Saturday afternoon had a soundtrack, this would definitely be on that CD.”
  • “F.A.N.S.” is the new bonus track from Tech N9ne’s new album All 6s and 7s.
  • The Future of R&B 39 has some hot songs from Cee-Lo Green, T-Pain, Trey Songz and more.
  • Eminem Slaughterhouse and Yelawolf are Shady 2.0
  • “50 Ways” is a new song from Eminem.
  • Texas’ own Chamillionaire comes in over the “All Of The Lights” track.
  • Evolve is a FreEP full of instrumentals. Cool!
  • I don’t know why I have a good feeling about Covergirls from Aaries, a set of covers they’ve refactored with new arrangements and what not.
  • Bobby Ray’s mad at … somebody, I don’t remember whom. Anyway, his new dis record “No Future” has a lot of heat.
  • Sky Ferreira has an interesting sound, and she’s got a new EP called As If.
  • People are all divided over the madness of Sucker Punch, but at least you can enjoy the soundtrack at least.
  • Bei Major sampled James Blunt for his new song “Heavenly Beautiful”
  • The world’s greatest Ghostface impersonator Action Bronson has a new song called “Jerk Chicken” alongside Maffew Ragazino.
  • Screaming Bloody Murder is the new album from Sum 41.
  • John Legend has a cover of Adele’s song “Rolling In The Deep” for your listening pleasure.
  • “For The First Time” is a remix from The Script by 8Barz.
  • Thin Lizzy vs. the Pixies in “The Boys Are Back In Heaven” by Phil Retrospector
  • Common! “Follow Me” is an unreleased Be era track, albeit tagged.

I PROBABLY WOULDN’T LIKE IT, BUT MANY PEOPLE WOULD

Will that hold you? Cool, see you next week.
